The tourism sector in Algeria is witnessing a real transformation, represented by the acceleration of investments aimed at increasing the accommodation capacity of hotels and tourist facilities. This sector is considered one of the most important strategic pillars upon which public authorities rely to promote “Destination Algeria” and enhance its contribution to diversifying the national economy.
According to data issued by official authorities, Algeria is currently implementing 582 projects out of 2,562 approved projects under construction. These projects are expected to add approximately 70,000 new beds by the end of 2025. This expansion aims to increase accommodation capacity from the current 140,000 beds to more than 210,000 beds, contributing to reducing the accommodation deficit and providing reasonable prices to encourage domestic tourism.
Facing strong competition from neighboring tourist destinations such as Tunisia, the Algerian government has launched several incentives to support this sector, including providing facilities for investors, improving tourism training programs, and developing health resorts and thalassotherapy projects. The Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI), in collaboration with the National Agency for Tourist Lands (ANFT), is working to improve the exploitation of tourist lands by developing and regulating tourist expansion areas and creating new sites, particularly in coastal areas and the high plateaus, which have been identified as strategic hubs due to their significant cultural and natural potential that remains underutilized.
Technological innovations also play a pivotal role in driving the sector forward, with some startups offering innovative digital solutions to promote tourism in Algeria, including online booking services and the design of personalized tours tailored to individuals’ interests.
The report emphasized that the success of a sustainable and competitive tourism sector depends largely on improving management methods and enhancing coordination between government, private, and civil society stakeholders. Supporting investments, facilitating access to loans, and introducing travel insurance services are essential measures to restructure the sector and transform it into a powerful lever for national economic growth. This trend reflects Algeria’s ambition to revitalize its tourism sector and make it a real contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP), while also creating new job opportunities and supporting related value chains. This will enhance its regional and international standing as a diverse tourist destination rich in history, culture, and stunning nature.
