On June 2rd and 3rd, 2025, an important conference took place at Der Divan – The Arab Cultural House in Berlin, focusing on the rich tradition and current challenges of Arab-Islamic philosophy. Organized by the Divan Centre in cooperation with Kuwait University’s Department of Philosophical Studies, the event brought together renowned scholars and researchers from Germany and the Arab world to deepen intercultural dialogue and explore the significance of this philosophical heritage.
The event was officially opened with a welcoming speech by H.E. Abdalla Al-Hamar, the Ambassador of Qatar and Chairman of the Divan’s Advisory Board. Following this, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Turki from the University of Münster delivered an inspiring keynote on the topic: “Towards a Philosophical Interculturality in the Arab-Islamic World.” His remarks set the tone for the discussions that followed and highlighted the importance of intercultural dialogue in philosophy.
Throughout the day, key topics were addressed, including the current state of Arab-Islamic philosophy, political changes and secularization, as well as philosophical exchanges between East and West. The conference was divided into three main sessions, focusing on questions such as the relevance of Arab-Islamic philosophy today, its influence on modern Arab thought, and the complex relationship between Arab and Western philosophy.
Participants had the opportunity to gain new perspectives, explore the influence of Arab-Islamic thought on contemporary projects, and promote intercultural dialogue. The event provided a valuable platform for exchange and reflection on the heritage and challenges of Arab-Islamic philosophy in a global context.
The day concluded around 6:30 PM, and the discussions clearly demonstrated the importance of preserving this philosophical heritage while actively fostering dialogue between different cultures.
We look back on a successful conference that deepened understanding of Arab-Islamic philosophy and enriched intercultural exchange. An inspiring event that will surely have a lasting impact.
