On 24 October 2023, a round table entitled “Is Europe winning the energy war? brought together some of the world’s leading energy experts to discuss how to secure Europe’s energy supply in light of the current tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
During the event, Mr Andriy Kobolov, former CEO of Naftgaz and co-founder of ENEY, expressed his concern about Russian war tactics and suggested that Europe should try to cut prices and disrupt the flow of money in order to reduce Russia’s profits. On the other hand, Mr. Ben Aris, Cofounder and chief editor of bne IntelliNews, showed skepticism concerning the imposed sanctions against Russian oil and recommended adjustments and stricter enforcement to cap the prices.
Morten Frisch, Senior Partner at Morten Frisch Consulting, emphasized the importance of energy transition and saw nuclear power as an important component of a low- emission energy policy.
The discussion, moderated by Dr. Thomas O’Donnell, highlighted different views on the environmental challenges of oil and gas and their impact on the climate. In addition, the possibility of resuming the use of Nord Stream in the future was discussed.
In summary, this roundtable highlighted the importance of finding innovative and pragmatic solutions to support Europe’s energy independence and minimize its environmental impact.
