The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZD) in the Sultanate of Oman has witnessed a significant influx of investment in the tourism sector. Total investments allocated to this sector by the end of last year amounted to more than 853 million Omani riyals, equivalent to more than two billion US dollars, according to official data issued by the Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm (SEZAD).
The list of tourism investments in Duqm included 21 hotels, 10 hotel apartments, and a multi-facility tourism project comprising hotels, villas, and hotel apartments. These figures reflect the growing demand for tourism services in the region, the continuous growth in the number of visitors and tourists, as well as the active investment environment and the facilities and incentives provided by the relevant authorities.
According to statistics issued by the Authority, the number of tourism projects fully completed by the end of last year reached 16, while 11 projects are still under construction, and five projects are in the pre-construction stages. Engineer Ahmed bin Ali Akaak, CEO of the Authority, explained that Duqm’s geographical location on the Arabian Sea and its view of the Indian Ocean, along with its moderate climate throughout the year, constitute important tourist attractions. He also pointed to the availability of numerous facilities and services that support the growth of the tourism sector, in addition to a number of prominent tourist attractions such as the Rock Garden, Duqm Beach Park, and the public park in the Sai Commercial District, in addition to the easy access to natural sites such as Barr Al Hikman and the Oryx Sanctuary via Duqm.
Akaak confirmed that the zone’s management is working in cooperation with the Special Economic Zones Authority and Free Zones to organize tourism, economic, and sporting events aimed at promoting Duqm’s investment and tourism potential and encouraging the private sector and entrepreneurs to invest in this sector.
He pointed out that the zone’s five-year strategy for the period 2025-2030, which was launched in the first quarter of this year, includes key axes for developing tourism activities, including the development of a balanced lifestyle and attracting tourists and partners. The first axis aims to make Duqm a preferred destination for living and working through urban, commercial, and social development, while the second axis focuses on enhancing the visitor experience and stimulating investment in the tourism sector.
He also highlighted the “Pass Through Duqm” campaign, which was recently launched in the region. This campaign is considered one of the most prominent tourism promotional events, and over the past years, it has contributed to attracting increasing numbers of tourists, especially those coming to and from Dhofar Governorate.
He concluded by saying that this year is expected to witness significant growth in tourism activity, driven by the various events that will be held within the campaign, and thanks to Duqm’s diverse beaches in areas such as Nafun and Ras Madrakah, which enhance investment opportunities in tourism projects that leverage the region’s natural resources.
