A New Prime Minister in Sudan After Three Years of Vacancy
Teilen auf FacebookTeilen auf XTeilen auf WhatsApp

The appointment of Dr. Kamal Idris as Sudan’s Prime Minister, following over three years without one, marks a long-awaited turning point. For some, it sparks renewed hope; for others, it raises concerns. The internationally experienced and highly regarded Idris now faces an immensely complex task in a country exhausted by war, political fragmentation, and economic collapse.

Idris previously held prominent roles, including leading the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and serving as an international arbitrator. In 2010, he ran as an independent candidate against ousted President Omar al-Bashir. His diplomatic expertise and global stature have fueled hopes that he can rehabilitate Sudan’s international image and rebuild bridges with the global community. Observers believe foreign policy is the key arena where Idris could achieve breakthroughs—provided he overcomes domestic resistance from forces fearing a loss of influence if the country opens up internationally.

Yet his mandate extends beyond foreign relations. The seasoned diplomat must also tackle an even more urgent challenge: the psychological and economic recovery of Sudan’s war-weary population. He is expected not only to address political and economic issues but also to serve as a unifying symbol and trusted figure during a phase demanding immense resilience and resolve.

Domestically, Idris confronts covert resistance from certain political and military factions. Analysts report that some actors aim to engineer his failure to prove civilian leadership ineffective. Severe political polarization and obstruction by war profiteers pose existential threats to his success.

Sudanese politicians argue that Idris must swiftly form a lean technocratic government committed to a clear national agenda: restoring basic services, ensuring security, and preserving national unity.

On the foreign policy front, priorities include reclaiming Sudan’s role on global stages, mobilizing financial support for reconstruction, and regulating foreign presence in the country—reportedly a growing threat to national security.

While some deem it too early to assess Idris’s prospects, his proximity to international decision-makers and regional networks offers a rare chance to reintegrate Sudan into the global community—if he secures clear backing from the Sovereign Council and sufficient political latitude.

Kamal Idris’s success will hinge not only on his leadership but also on the willingness of military and civilian institutions to collaborate constructively, beyond self-serving interests. As global attention turns to Berlin, Addis Ababa, and New York, the true litmus test lies in Khartoum itself: Can the Idris government prioritize state interests over rival factions?
