The Hamad Trauma Center, affiliated with Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar, has been accredited by the World Health Organization as a Collaborating Center for Trauma, becoming the third center from the corporation to receive this prestigious designation. This achievement adds to previous accreditations obtained by the Smoking Cessation Center, as a Collaborating Center for Tobacco Addiction Treatment, and the Department of Geriatrics and Long-Term Care, as a Collaborating Center for Healthy Aging and Dementia Care.
Established in 2007 at Hamad General Hospital, the Hamad Trauma Center is a Level 1 trauma center according to the classification of the American College of Surgeons’ Trauma Committee. Since then, it has evolved into a cornerstone of Qatar’s national trauma system. In 2014, it received accreditation for excellence in trauma care from the Canadian International Accreditation Authority, reflecting its commitment to the highest standards of medical care quality.
Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Sowaidi, Director-General of Hamad Medical Corporation, emphasized that this accreditation reflects the corporation’s leadership in trauma care and its ongoing commitment to advancing scientific research, education, and clinical excellence. He noted that collaboration with the WHO will enable the center to enhance innovation, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to the global development of trauma care.
The Hamad Trauma Center, as a WHO Collaborating Center, will work on Improving trauma care and referral systems to ensure optimal treatment, Contributing to the development of training and education standards for trauma care, Supporting the WHO’s efforts to establish a global platform bringing together trauma care experts from various countries, Enhancing regional leadership in trauma treatment.
Dr. Hassan Al-Thani, Head of Vascular Surgery and Trauma Services at Hamad Medical Corporation, emphasized that this accreditation marks a qualitative leap in the development of trauma care services in the region. He explained that the center will contribute to Improving the quality and safety of medical care for trauma patients, Enhancing regional and international collaboration in trauma research, Providing an advanced educational environment to train medical professionals specialized in managing trauma systems.
It is noteworthy that WHO Collaborating Centers are designated to support the organization’s programs in various fields, such as nursing, occupational health, chronic diseases, and health technologies. The global network includes over 800 centers in 80 countries, enhancing opportunities for knowledge and expertise exchange on an international scale.
